OUR OLD PAL GULCH
Monday November 30, 2009
John: In the mid-80’s, I worked as a hotwalker in Saratoga for Hall of Fame trainer Leroy Jolley.

Easily one of the coolest jobs I ever had. Horses like Manila and Leo Castelli were in the barn. At the time, Jolley trained for Peter Brant and even had a horse for Mick’s ex-wife Jerry Hall.

Gulch was in the barn and taught me a huge lesson. I was holding him as a groom was giving him a bath. I turned my head for a second and Gulch bit my chest. Man did it f$%#@* hurt. Didn’t break the skin or rip my t-shirt but left a huge bruise and some teeth marks.
Says here that he’s retiring from Lane’s End. So I say to him enjoy your time in Boca or wherever you go now old friend. I’ll never forget your bicuspids.

Gulch is now with us at Old Friends. What an honor. Come visit…We also have another Leroy Jolley star…Fortunate Prospect. P.S. He hasn’t bitten me yet. Great movie. (and I’m a recovering movie critic from The Boston Globe) We have Bob Holthus’ Proper Reality as well..

I’m looking for info on Moody Jolley’s horse Rudoma. How did the 1959 filly get her name? I have a cigar label from 1918 that bears the same name. The maker’s name was (I beleive) Rudolph H. Massack - hence Rudo-ma. Correct me if I’m wrong.
